Arguably our greatest ever achievement as a Club, West Ham won the ECWC with a fine display at Wembley. Most of us would've been far too young to have seen this game at the time but if you haven't I'd recommend getting hold of the dvd and watching it

For those on here that have dismissed the Europa Cup as a hindrance to us next season, take a look as this is what going to football is all about

My dad was there and says it was the best performance by any team he'd seen at Wembley. Considering he went to the world cup final, man u winning the European cup there and countless fa cup finals that's some achievement

Like others on here I was at the game. Was 11 and was totally blown away by the noise, supporters had them wooden rattle things back then. The game was possible the best ever seen at Wembley.

I was there aged 10.
To this day I will remember seeing the green Wembley turf for the first time and it took my breath away.
Up until then I thought Wembley had black and white grass as I'd only seen the Cup Final on TV!!
I was hooked from that day on.
Had the pleasure of going back for the 75 80 and 81 finals

One thing I recall from the ECWC campaign was going to the first game v's La Gantoise (aka Gent) and finding loads of room on the north bank. I think there were only about 19,000 there that night, so not many of us caught euro cup fever.

Scored 5 goals in 20 minutes against West Brom too didn't he?

Let's hear it for that unsung hero Brian 'Stag' Dear. He had the unenviable task of replacing the injured Budgie Byrne that season and ended up our top scorer in the ECWC tournament. He even cracked a superb shot into the net at Wembley from a wonderful through pass from Bobby Moore but had it disallowed for a doubtful offside decision.
He fell into Greenwood's bad books after the Blackpool fiasco, but is without doubt one of West Ham's legends. He's a great bloke too.

Re: On this day 51 years ago
Would say the competition was completely different back then to what it's become now. I used to bloody love the European cup and cup winners cup 20 years ago, were great competitions.

Called a cup competition for a reason and that should be because there isn't a mini league involved at the beginning like there is now.

Watched the game years ago, so will have to dig it out for another viewing.

Made it 3 brilliant cup finals 3 years running that West Ham players were involved in, as the FA cup and World cup finals weren't too shabby either.

Was there as an 11 year old with my younger brother. One of the best nights ever, and the biggest collection of West Ham supporters at one game since the '23 cup final. Must have been at least 75,000 West ham that night.
As in the '64 cup final we had 11 Englishmen in the team, most of whom were from around the London area. Those really were the days.

I was there with my dad and others. Massive fleet of coaches from the pick up point in Barking. The TSV supporters were a good bunch too. Two well taken goals by Alan Sealey did the job.
